Progress Update and Question

This week I am working hard to scan all the original artwork from Will to send over to US Games, as well as trying to finish up the companion book, and figure out some issues around the borders and numbering.  Still, I thought I could share a picture of a Lenormand-sized card from the prototype deck I printed from Will's scans, and one of the actual paintings.

There is a greater vibrancy, a rich depth to the original, which is just beautiful!  Hopefully, some more of that will come through with these higher resolution scans and the far better printing technology that US Games brings to the table.

So, a quick question: do you have a preference regarding the colour of the backs of these cards?  I have an idea of what to do for it, but am just not sure whether to go with green or purple, or something else entirely?

  1. I don't think purple fits this deck. I should choose from more earthy kind of colors or perhaps more than on color
I should also keep in mind that without a white border the cards tend to damage (peel of) more quickly. People can always trim the borders if they don’t like them. Look what some have done with the Druidcraft tarot . You could keep that debordering wish in mind when you create the background

    1. Good points, Ellen, thank you!

I guess I was thinking purple based on the image I'd planned to take the back from, but you're right about the deck having a generally earthy feel.

And it looks like it will have to have borders, after all, so you're safe on that front :)

    3. I'd have to agree about not choosing purple. An earthy colour would be good!

    4. Okay, I hear you, Alison :) So far, no-one likes purple!

  2. I prefer earthy colors too. I don't think purple would fit. And I think I will trim the deck if it has borders so :p Please, take that in mind with the backs <3

    1. Hiya Pepi, on the basis of this, I've come up with a second back idea. In both, I don't think trimming would be an issue, but I'll remind US Games about it further along :)

  3. Dark green with a simple Celtic knotwork design in the centre...nothing too complicated or frilly - just my thought ;)

    1. I was thinking something a bit more deck specific, but I'll keep it in mind. Fits with my general policy to KISS :)

    2. I like the idea of a greyscale black and white of the first sketch of the Rider. Very pale, maybe with a thin, dark grey celtic knotwork border around it. Or just plain white outer borders. It would certainly be different.

Or maybe you could select one of the plaid patterns that Worthington so often paints his Celtic men wearing, and have that as a back. :)

    3. Oooh, I rather like the plaid idea! And that would work well for trimmers, too... :)

  4. That can be nice but when I hear "plaid", I think of The Rider waite plaid, and I definitely don't like that one

    1. I'll try to post some different options next week, and see what you all think of them :)

  5. I would like green for the back too and a white border for the front. I also would like the cards not to be too big, for a grand tableau needs much space as it is.

I can't wait to buy them :-) very good work.
ps: I would love a kipper deck done by will worthington in celtic designs too. then I would have my favourites all done by him.

    1. No kipper in the planning stages yet, I'm afraid, Frauke. Maybe you could approach Will, if you have an idea :)

I'm pretty sure US Games understand about Lenormand sizing, so that shouldn't be a problem. Certainly, I'm formatting the scans for poker size cards!

    1. Okay, another vote for green. You'll all have to drop by again next Wednesday, so far I've worked up 5 backs for you to look at... :)
